Growing up in the 1990s, movies and TV shows were the only digital 'windows' teenage girls had into the complex world of becoming a woman. These movies and tv shows shaped our initial outlook on what becoming a women meant and looked like for regular girls.
Written and directed in 1998 by Tamara Jenkins, Slums of Beverly
profoundly impacted my 14 year old hormonal, viriginal sense of self. It exposed me to the reality that my changing body, albeit an awkward and frightening experience, was going to be a powerful tool (if not the most powerful) in the coming years. Having lost my mom to cancer the year prior, I related to the goofy, rebellious, naive, curly-haired, motherless tomboy Vivian was. Hardly a well mannered, articulate debutante, Vivian is the quintessential definition of what we like to call around here a 'Spinelli' - a girl who doesn't adhere to the stereotype social norms prescribed for girls pretty much from birth. Oblivious to the powers of her newly developed figure, her wardrobe feels consistent with her sarcastic humor and sexual naivety. Band tees, racer stripes, jean shorts and halter tops would have all been in that iconic yellow laundry basket of hers. Not to mention sky-high 70s platforms and sporty knee high socks.
Rita, the film's supporting actress and older cousin to Vivian, is the only maternal figure Vivian has throughout the film. A true rolling stone, Rita lives her life on the fringe, finding herself in compromising positions throughout the film. She's the older sister Vivian never had and the gateway to her own female own discovery. Rita's wardrobe reflects her playful, carefree yet sensual personality. Wrap dresses, slips dresses, sexy bras and panties, crop tops and bell bottoms would have all been found in her closet.
